Only Ronaldo and Messi Have Recorded More Champions League Assists Than Di Maria

Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Angel Di Maria finished off UEFA Champions League play in the calendar year with a strong showing against Istanbul Basaksehir. The Argentine recorded a pair of assists against the Turkish side over the second half. In total, Di Maria topped off the year with a combined five Champions League assists as he recorded three over last season’s knockout stage and two over this season’s group stage.

Di Maria continued to move up the Champions League assists leaderboard as he has now recorded 32 career assists in the competition, according to UEFA‘s official website. The 32 assists for Di Maria ranks third all-time behind Cristiano Ronaldo (41) and Lionel Messi (36).

The Argentine midfielder has recorded 15 of his 32 career Champions League assists over his current run with PSG, including logging six assists over last season’s competition. The other 17 were recorded over his runs with both Real Madrid and Benfica.

Di Maria should continue to rack up more Champions League assists with PSG, but it may be a long shot for him to surpass both Ronaldo and Messi’s assists totals as they both are still playing and in the latter stages of their prime days.
