Has Neymar Become More Important to PSG Than Mbappé?

Both Neymar Jr. and Kylian Mbappé arrived at Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2017, and more than three years later, fans are debating which one should sign an extension and continue their career in the French capital.

The two superstars are contractually obligated to play for PSG until after the 2021-2022 season, but as we all know with players of their caliber, a decision on their future must be known before they enter their final year so that they don’t leave on a free transfer to another club. That is the current situation PSG’s sporting director, Leonardo, must navigate.

Negotiations between the club and representatives for Neymar and Mbappé are ongoing but a conclusion doesn’t appear to be coming down the pipeline anytime soon. In the meantime, fans will just have to pass the time by playing online casino games from Jackpotcity Casino and wait for the breaking news.

The fact remains that PSG may not be able to keep Mbappé and Neymar in their squad due to financial restraints. The ongoing pandemic has crippled clubs financially and PSG is no different. Both players will be looking for an increase in wages and that may not be doable at this time especially as Leonardo looks to bring in a new manager and rebuild the squad given this season’s results.

PSG’s 2020-21 campaign has gotten off to a slow start with three losses in Ligue 1 already and in the UEFA Champions League, they’ve lost to RB Leipzig and Manchester United. Between Neymar and Mbappé, it’s the Brazilian who has been more consistent and his playmaking ability appears to be more important to the team offensively than Mbappé’s pace.

After Wednesday’s crucial win over Manchester United in the group stage of the Champions League where Neymar scored two goals, I asked fans which player they want to see remain at PSG and sign a contract extension. The results were surprising, to say the least.

As of the publication of this article, Mbappé only slightly leads a fast-food sandwich, which I threw in as a joke. Neymar is the overwhelming favorite among PSG supporters to stay at the club. I can’t say that I thought I would ever see that considering what happened during the summer of 2019.

It was widely reported that Neymar wanted to leave Paris and return to FC Barcelona to play alongside Lionel Messi. Ultimately, Barcelona couldn’t meet PSG’s asking price and Neymar remained with PSG where he led the club to their first appearance in the Champions League final. Meanwhile, Barcelona is in shambles and even Messi wants to leave now.

Mbappé is a generational talent but supporters are coming to grips with the fact that he hasn’t scored a goal in the Champions League for over a year. Given his young age and affinity for Real Madrid, fans know he won’t be a PSG lifer. Mbappé will leave at some point, so why not cash in now and build around Neymar who is still very much in his prime?

I still believe the ultimate goal for PSG is to sign Mbappé and Neymar to an extension and it’s possible that the decision is playing a role in the Frenchman’s goal drought.

One thing we know for sure is that the next few months should be very interesting both on and off the pitch for PSG.
