Last summer, Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique Lyonnais put some respect towards Ligue 1’s name after the capital club reached the UEFA Champions League final. Meanwhile, Lyon reached the semi-final by eliminating Juventus FC and Manchester City FC before falling to FC Bayern Munich.
For the 2020-21 edition of the Champions League, Lyon didn’t qualify for the tournament but hope to challenge Paris Saint-Germain as four teams vying for the league title and the other two Champions League spots for 2021-22.
Once a PSG transfer target and former Juventus defender, Mattia De Sciglio, is now with Lyon. He spoke with Le Progress about their upcoming fixture against Les Parisiens next weekend and competing against the capital club.
“The objective is to qualify for the Champions League,” De Sciglio said. “There are four or five teams in two, three points, and the meeting in Paris will be an opportunity to get us closer. If we overtake PSG, it will be a good performance. We are 3rd, and we have to be ambitious.”
Then De Sciglio spoke about his Italian compatriots on the PSG squad, Marco Verratti, and Alessandro Florenzi, who he knows well during their time with the Italy National Team.
“With Florenzi, we know each other from the selection, from the hopes. I know Marco Verratti well too,” De Sciglio said. “PSG are very strong. But we are only at two points for the moment, and we will do our best to try to reach him. If you have the right frame of mind, the will to play as a team, to be very compact, I believe that we can achieve a good result.”
In Ligue 1, PSG has struggled to get results to distance themselves from the rest of the clubs chasing them. Lyon is in fourth place and will like to make the gap smaller with a win at the Parc des Princes.
