Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe is currently on a rare UEFA Champions League goal drought. The French talent has not scored a Champions League goal in 2020. Mbappe failed to find the back of the net earlier this year in PSG’s Champions League knockout stage run, and he has not scored in the group stage this season.
While many have criticized Mbappe for his sluggish Champions League performances this year, French national team manager Didier Deschamps is not among those bashing the forward. Deschamps knows very well how quickly Mbappe can turn the tide with his play. Deschamps shared to RMC Sport his reasoning for not being overly concerned with Mbappe’s current goal drought in the biggest club football competition in the continent.
“Kylian is always a player who makes the differences,” Deschamps said. “Obviously he needs to score, it’s been a while since he scored [in the UCL]. It happens, all top attackers can experience a period when they have a little less success and efficiency.
“I’m not asking myself questions or having concerns about Kylian. He wants to stop this series of course but that does not prevent him from doing decisive things for his club.”
Mbappe will have one final chance to score a Champions League goal in the calendar year in PSG’s upcoming matchup against Istanbul Basaksehir next week, which will be the team’s last group stage fixture of the season.
