‘It Was a Very Special Moment’ — Marquinhos Looks Back on his Memorable Champions League Goal Against Atalanta

Paris Saint-Germain’s UEFA Champions League final run last season was special for the club. After multiple early eliminations in the competition, the club willed through for its first-ever appearance in the final. And while PSG came up short to FC Bayern Munich in the final, it was still a monumental feat for the club to even reach this stage of the tournament.

For Marquinhos, this run meant a lot to him, as he had been there for many of the team’s letdown performances in the competition. And for him over last season’s run, it is one that he will cherish for the rest of his career. In speaking to PSG TV, he elaborated on why last season’s Champions League run was his best moment while with the team.

“It’s the best time I’ve spent with the Parisian jersey,” Marquinhos said. “And also all the national titles that we have won. But I think this experience in Lisbon and this emotion, it was really a magical moment. In addition, I was able to score in important matches. It was something very special for me and for PSG too.”

As Marquinhos touched on, he scored key goals in the run, which included the clutch game-tying goal against Atalanta in the quarterfinals stage. The Brazilian defender reflected on what the goal still means to his career now.

“It was a very special moment because it was at the end of the game,” Marquinhos said. “I was playing in midfield but I heard Thiago Silva tell me to go ahead for the last minutes. I go into the box and Ney gives me the pass. Everything was so fast, the ball bounces right in front of me so I can score the goal. It was a unique moment because we had managed to win and pass this quarterfinal.”

This goal is among the most memorable in the history of PSG.
