‘We Know he’s a Great World-Class Player’ — Nimes Goalkeeper on Facing Mbappe

Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe was one of the club’s top performers in its recent 4-0 away league win against Nimes Olympique. Mbappe scored two goals, created two goal-scoring opportunities for teammates, and completed three dribbles during his time on the pitch. Nimes defenders continually struggled to contain Mbappe while he was in the final third.

Nimes goalkeeper Baptiste Reynet had a quality showing in the match with seven saves recorded. But in the end, he allowed four goals, with two of them coming off of thunderous shot attempts from Mbappe. Reynet had to tip his cap to Mbappe for his standout showing in the fixture. Reynet spoke further to Telefoot (via Canal Supporters) about his side’s performance and Mbappe’s showcase in the match.

“We tried to hold on as much as possible,” Reynet said. “We didn’t manage to do it until the 80th minute, it’s a shame. Take four goals despite a good personal performance? Yes, it’s always infuriating and frustrating for a goalie.

“We cannot take away his effectiveness. We know he’s a great world-class player and he proved it again tonight.”

Mbappe was considered a doubt to even play against Nimes, as he had just featured for the French national team in a UEFA Nations League fixture two days prior. But on short rest and with the club currently dealing with an injury crisis, Mbappe willed through for his side.
