When Paris Saint-Germain fell to Manchester United FC on matchday one of the UEFA Champions League group stage, one talking point began to make its way through the French football media.
As Mauro Icardi missed the match due to an injury, capital club manager Thomas Tuchel shifted Kylian Mbappé inside to play the striker role. Hindsight is 20/20, but it doesn’t seem that the 21-year-old plays his best at that position.
RMC Sport analyst Rolland Courbis made an appearance on Top of the Foot, where he made it clear that Mbappé shouldn’t be playing as a striker.
“When you are lucky to have Neymar and Mbappé in your squad and against Atalanta, Leipzig, you have neither Neymar nor Mbappé who score, the same against Bayern, it is problematic,” Courbis said.
“Yesterday, you continue a fourth game without a goal for these two players. When you put Mbappé in number nine, we are not going to put him at number nine again 50 times. It is not his position. It is to use 20% of Mbappé by putting it in number nine. Let’s try to be a little less stubborn. Then we’re not going to hit the ambulance.”
🗣💬 "Tu ne vas pas mettre 50 fois Mbappé numéro 9 ! Ce n'est pas son poste et c'est tirer 20% de ses qualités"
