In Paris Saint-Germain’s first day back following the October international break, the club was hit with yet another injury crisis.
Tuchel held a scheduled training session for PSG on Thursday ahead of the team’s fixture against Nimes Olympique. Many players did not train with the team and in his press conference (via PSG TV), Tuchel clarified the status of some of the team’s key talents.
“We have a lot of absentees tomorrow,” Tuchel said. “Draxler, Verratti and Marquinhos came back injured from selection. Kurzawa and Di Maria are suspended. Ander Herrera has tested positive for the virus, and he has not trained with us. Danilo is due to join us today but he has been in contact with Cristiano Ronaldo and he has to stay away from the squad. Dagba did a new test, we’ll see if it’s negative. Bernat is injured of course, Kehrer too and Icardi injured his knee last week, he is forfeited for tomorrow.”
The more concerning ones are the injuries to Draxler, Verratti and Marquinhos. All three players had just returned from the recent international break and featured in two games for their respective teams. Draxler is currently dealing with an Achilles tendon injury, but he did manage to play in Germany’s UEFA Nations League fixture against Switzerland. Marquinhos is not expected to feature with the team for quite a while due to a thigh injury that he suffered during Brazil’s fixture against Peru earlier this week. And with Verratti, the exact details of his injury are unclear at the moment.
Still, Tuchel is not creating excuses for his side with the ongoing injury crisis. He is expected to field a strong team for the fixture against Nimes.
“Our challenge is great,” Tuchel said. “I have to find solutions to have an ambitious team on the pitch in Nîmes tomorrow, a team that allows us to attack and score goals. We never took a game lightly before a Champions League match, and we won’t start tomorrow.
“But we have to pay attention to the health of the players, and some like Mbappe or the South Americans have played and traveled a lot.”
PSG could possibly secure first place in Ligue 1 for the first time this season with a win against Nimes.
