Thiago Silva’s final seasons with Paris Saint-Germain were faced with much adversity. The club continued to dominate in domestic competitions, with Silva racking up more trophy wins. But in the UEFA Champions League competition, the club fell short time and time again.
After such a lengthy run with PSG, Silva departed for Chelsea over the recent summer transfer window. He had an opportunity to return to PSG but felt that it was best to leave.
Silva once again touched on his departure from PSG in speaking to the Brazilian-based outlet Esporte Interativo. He spoke about his mindset towards the Champions League had he decided to return to the club for another season.
“You know, I’m motivated, I live for challenges,” Silva said. “I had been playing in Paris for eight years. Logically, one way or another, you fall in comfort. Not a comfort in the sense of no longer working, no longer looking for good results, but you end up falling into a routine.
“And for me, it would be difficult to start another year with all this pressure of having to win the Champions League. So logically, I change the air a bit, I’m a little more relaxed. Not that there is no pressure here, the pressure is the same.”
Considering that Silva had endured multiple heartbreaking Champions League eliminations while with PSG, it surely would have been difficult for him to give it another go in the competition with the Ligue 1 side. But now with Chelsea, he has new challenges in aiming to win English titles and possibly emerging as a serious contender for the Champions League this season.
