Thomas Tuchel has been the one receiving the most criticism following Paris Saint-Germain’s loss to Manchester United. Some have called for Tuchel to be fired, while others believe that the German manager needs to make several serious changes in order to get the very best out of his side.
For one, former PSG manager Luis Fernandez is not among the ones calling for the board to sack Tuchel. Instead, Fernandez (via L’Equipe) believes that Tuchel needs to make a few tweaks to his tactical setup.
“I consider that Neymar should not play on one side, but rather in the axis and in a 4-2-3-1,” Fernandez said. “In this position, he can make the difference. But the Neymar of today is not the great Neymar that we knew a few months ago. Just like Di Maria for that matter.”
Fernandez also sees that Tuchel needs to revamp his midfield setup.
“Maybe Tuchel has to strengthen his midfield so that Neymar, Di Maria, and Mbappe have less effort to make,” Tuchel said. “I recognize that there are still a lot of gaps in this. In this team, also, there are not eleven players who defend. Mbappe Neymar and Di Maria do not defend. That’s why, in my opinion, he chose three midfielders at the start of the game to collect balls.”
Tuchel has shown over his ongoing run at PSG that he is not afraid of making significant tactical changes to his side. It will be interesting to see if the German manager plans to once again do just that.
