Bakker Hopes to Soon Earn a Call-Up for the Netherlands National Team

Paris Saint-Germain defender Mitchel Bakker has become one of the top stock risers in Ligue 1 this year. He is now aiming for one of his current biggest goals.

Bakker recently made his debut for Netherlands U21 last month. He helped the club pick up wins against the U21 sides from Belarus and Norway in 2021 UEFA Euro U21 Qualification contests. Still, Bakker feels that he could soon receive a call-up for the Netherlands national team. He has not yet played with the Dutch first-team, but he is eyeing this grand step up in his career. The left-back spoke further to the Dutch-based outlet De Telegraaf about this potential move.

“If you are referring to Orange, then I certainly dare to think big,” Bakker said. “Why not? If I continue like this at the club, I hope to get a message. On the other hand, I only had my debut in Belarus [Netherlands U21] a month ago. I will first focus on that.”

Netherlands certainly has Baker on its radar but has no real need for a left-back at the moment. Nonetheless, Bakker is focused on improving his play, which he has done so with PSG over the past couple of months.

“I develop well, train at a world level and play a lot,” Bakker said.

“That’s what you want as a football player. It’s going in the right direction.”
