Paris Saint-Germain defeated Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16. The matchup was an interesting one, where the German club won the first-leg 2-1 and did some taunting afterward.
Then with the coronavirus pandemic beginning to hit France, the return fixture at the Parc des Prince was played behind closed doors with no supporters in attendance. Nonetheless, it didn’t stop the Collectif Ultras Paris from singing outside the stadium.
Neymar Jr. led the way as for the first time in four years. The capital club had advanced past the Round of 16 and rushed to the balcony to celebrate with the supporters.
Nearly six months removed from that defeat, Dortmund manager Lucien Favre spoke with France Football to discuss what went wrong in that matchup. Looking back, the 62-year-old manager appears to blame themselves more than giving PSG credit.
Furthermore, he stated that his only regret was the inability to score one goal in the return fixture.
“We only have to blame ourselves. We had not managed to reproduce the same performance at the Parc des Princes as the first leg in Dortmund,” Favre said. “We must not forget that three days before this return match, we had left a lot of strength on the lawn of Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Championship while Paris was at rest. But I’m not looking for excuses.”
“In Paris, we missed a lot of things. On the first leg, everyone thought we had a great match, but at 0-0, PSG had two great chances that could have changed the course of this first leg. The only regret is that we should have added a third goal late in the game.”
