Silva Reminisces on PSG’s Champions League Battles Against Chelsea

Now-former Paris Saint-Germain defender Thiago Silva had plenty of memorable moments while with the club. From his multitude of domestic cup final performances to clutch plays in Ligue 1, Silva left behind a stout legacy while with PSG. Many non-PSG fans remember his time with the club more from his UEFA Champions League performances, including the fixtures against his current club in Chelsea FC.

Silva faced Chelsea while with PSG in back-to-back seasons over the Champions League knockout stage. Chelsea eliminated PSG in 2014 over the quarterfinal round, but Les Parisiens avenged the loss with a dramatic round of 16 tie win in the following year. Silva fondly remembers both encounters.

In his first exclusive interview with Chelsea (via the club’s official website), Silva reminisced on the duels against his now-current team.

“They were huge games, with great players on both sides,” Silva said. “I think that PSG had the better of those matches but it could easily have gone the other way because games at the highest level between two great teams always come down to the smallest details. On those occasions, I think that PSG just about came out on top.

“When I think about them now, the incident that comes to mind is the penalty I gave away for handball. I was jumping with [Kurt] Zouma and my arm bounced off his shoulder and struck the ball. Also, the goal that I scored to make it 2-2 which sealed qualification for us in England, which was extremely important for me and PSG at that time.”

Silva also talked about his goal to win trophies with Chelsea.

“Being at a big club, winning trophies, that’s what drives me on,” Silva. “From my perspective, I’m doing everything to ensure that I can deliver the very best of myself.”

Silva could soon be in line to finally make his first appearance for Chelsea in Premier League play.
