Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar has tested positive for the coronavirus, according to a report from L’Equipe.
PSG announced on its official website that a total of three players recently tested positive for COVID-19. As a result, the club plans on testing every player and member of the coaching staff in the coming days. The L’Equipe report confirms that Neymar is one of those three who tested positive with midfielders Leandro Paredes and Angel Di Maria being the other two. They all will now self-isolate for at least a week.
Neymar, Paredes and Di Maria all recently returned from a short vacation in Ibiza. With the postponement of PSG’s Ligue 1 opener coupled with the current international break, the players took advantage of the extended break by taking a much-needed vacation.
There could also be more concern for PSG club officials. As evident from Mauro Icardi’s post on Instagram earlier this week, the Argentine along with goalkeeper Keylor Navas also took part in the mini trip to Ibiza. There have been no reports just yet as to whether these two players also tested positive for the coronavirus.
PSG is slated to kick off its Ligue 1 campaign on Sept. 10 against RC Lens. At the moment, there has been no official word as to whether the contest will be postponed yet again. If it does, the club could face rust and fitness concerns considering that it will go well over 20 days since featuring in an official fixture, which last came in its UEFA Champions League final contest last month.
