Report: Neymar Helped Convince Silva to Sign With Chelsea

The Thiago Silva free agent sweepstakes did not last very long. Silva’s contract with Paris Saint-Germain expired following the 2020 UEFA Champions League Final, as he officially became a free agent. Unlike his former club teammate in Edinson Cavani, Silva was able to find a suitor fairly quickly as he signed with Premier League side Chelsea.

Now, further details have emerged as to the reasons why Silva decided to sign with Chelsea.

According to a report from the English-based outlet The Telegraph, Silva sought advice from Neymar. The Brazilian forward was reportedly direct in his advice to Silva, urging him to sign with Chelsea. Neymar noted to Silva that if he decided not to sign with Chelsea, the Brazilian defender would later regret not taking up such a monumental challenge.

Per The Telegraph report, Silva also spoke to Willian about whether to accept Chelsea’s offer. The former Chelsea forward advised Silva to sign with the Blues.

Overall, Silva evaluated all of his options once when he became a free agent. For one, he received a late approach from PSG, but the Brazilian defender ultimately elected to take on a new challenge by signing with a Premier League club.

Silva is slated to make his Chelsea debut in its Premier League opener against Brighton & Hove Albion FC next week.
