Report: Neymar Could Wait Until 2022 for a New Contract

Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar could wait until 2022 to finalize a new contract deal, according to a report from the Brazilian-based outlet UOL.

Neymar’s current contract with PSG will run up until 2022. If the two sides do not come to an agreement on a new contract extension deal before 2022, Neymar will then become a free agent. According to the UOL report, this may be the route that Neymar’s camp may elect to go with.

When Neymar completed his move to FC Barcelona from Santos in 2013, his father and agent, Neymar Sr., had outlined a plan that projected the Brazilian forward to become a free agent at the age of 30, which will come in 2022. The plan was simply for Neymar to become a free agent at 30, as he would then have the freedom to sign with any team without a transfer fee being posted to acquire him.

This is a key aspect of the report, as Neymar’s camp would prefer him to become a free agent, so he could potentially earn one of the biggest contracts ever given to a player. This would not provide much of a problem for any powerhouse club who would be interested in Neymar since they would not have to pay up an astronomical transfer fee to acquire him. For instance, Manchester City would not have had any issue meeting Lionel Messi’s high wage demands had he left FC Barcelona on a free transfer. This would not have been the case if the Premier League side also had to deal with paying the Catalan club a high transfer fee as well.

The report does mention that PSG is all-in on renewing his contract and prolonging his stay with the club. PSG has the financial means to meet his high wage demands.

At the least, Neymar’s camp is entertaining contract extension talks with PSG. According to an August report from UOL, Neymar’s father met with PSG officials in Lisbon, Portugal to discuss a potential contract renewal deal for the talent. But the two sides did not come away from the meeting with a new deal for the forward.

It remains to be seen whether PSG will continue to engage in contract extension talks with Neymar and his camp.
