The Edinson Cavani free agent sweepstakes has taken yet another surprising turn. This time, one club is reopening its interest in possibly signing the forward.
Atletico Madrid is set to reopen its interest in former Paris Saint-Germain forward and current free agent Cavani, according to a report from the Spanish-based outlet Onda Madrid. The Spanish club was pursuing Osasuna forward Chimy Avila to fill a team need regarding forward depth. However, Avila recently suffered an ACL injury, which will keep him out of action for a significant amount of time. With Avila no longer an option, Atletico has turned its attention back to Cavani.
Per the report, Atletico is set on contacting Cavani’s representatives to discuss the financial implications of a possible free transfer deal. Cavani is currently a free agent, so Atletico does not have to go through the hurdle of contacting his owned club in this particular situation. The two clubs have not reportedly entered into serious discussions on a possible deal.
As alluded to, Atletico pursued Cavani earlier this year during the winter transfer window. However, Atletico was not able to come to terms on a transfer deal with PSG for the Uruguayan.
The clock is ticking for Cavani to find a new club. If talks with Atletico do not end in a long-awaited contract deal, the Uruguayan could possibly be without a club for the start of the league season across Europe.
