Atletico Madrid still views former Paris Saint-Germain forward and current free agent Edinson Cavani as a possible free transfer option, according to a report from L’Equipe.
Atletico has kept in touch with Cavani in recent months, per the report. The two sides went even further and elected to meet on Monday to discuss a two-year deal. Since Cavani is a free agent, Atletico only has to come to terms on a contract agreement with the Uruguayan talent rather than also posing a transfer fee to the parent club. It is unclear whether Cavani is simply taking the meeting to entertain the offer, or if he is seriously considering finally ending his status as a free agent.
Even though Atletico has also been in talks with FC Barcelona legend Luis Suarez, the club still views Cavani as a free transfer option since the club is slated to lose Alvaro Morata to Juventus FC. The Spanish side could also be set to lose Diego Costa as he has been linked with Fenerbahce.
Thus, Atletico is eyeing two possible forward reinforcements and views the two longtime Uruguayan teammates as serious candidates to fill the likely soon-to-be vacancies upfront. Atletico could possibly complete these two deals in the coming days as it prepares to begin its new league season next week.
