PSG Legend Jean-Marc Pilorget Says Marquinhos ‘Has Everything to be a Good Captain’

Former Paris Saint-Germain defender Jean-Marc Pilorget is issuing his support to the club’s newest team captain in Marquinhos.

PSG had a decision to make on who would be the team’s next captain following the departure of Thiago Silva. The longtime Brazilian defender wore the captain’s armband for the team over its biggest fixtures in the last decade. But as defender Presnel Kimpembe confirmed yesterday, defender Marquinhos has moved up the ladder and is now the new team captain.

Pilorget was a former PSG team captain himself, so he knows the leadership responsibilities that come with such a position. But the former French international is confident that Marquinhos will do well as the team’s new captain. In an interview with L’Equipe (via Canal Supporters), he talked about just why Marquinhos has what it takes to succeed in his new leadership role.

“Marquinhos has everything to be a good captain,” Pilorget said. “I’ve always had doubts about Thiago Silva in great moments. Marquinhos is irreproachable on the field and he is unanimous. Mentally, he holds the road, he seems to me hermetic to the pressure. He doesn’t have to do a lot of it.”

Marquinhos will have to wait quite a while to make his official debut as the team’s newest captain. He recently tested positive for the coronavirus after returning from a holiday out in Ibiza. Marquinhos is currently in self-isolation and will not only miss PSG’s scheduled training sessions over the upcoming days, but he is also slated to be out for the team’s upcoming Ligue 1 opener against RC Lens next week.

The club will closely monitor his health in hopes of clearing him for on-field action soon.
