Neymar, Mbappe and Navas Named Finalists for 2019-2020 Champions League Positional Awards

Paris Saint-Germain talents Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, and Keylor Navas were all standout performers over the team’s UEFA Champions League knockout stage run last season. Their keen performances in last season’s Champions League season have been recognized, as they were all named finalists for 2019-2020 Champions League positional awards, according to UEFA’s official website.

Mbappe and Neymar join FC Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski as finalists for the Champions League Forward of the Season honor. Mbappe scored five goals over the tournament, while Neymar chipped in with three goals, including a double against Borussia Dortmund in the round of 16. Lewandowski is the overwhelming favorite to win this honor, as he helped lead Bayern Munich to triumph in the competition.

Navas has a more realistic chance to win in his category as he is up for the Champions League Goalkeeper of the Season award. The Costa Rican goalkeeper logged a 0.7 goals conceded per game average in Champions League play last season, which tied him with Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer and Napoli’s Alex Meret for the best mark over the competition. Neuer and Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak are also up for the award.

Thiago Silva, Marquinhos, and Angel Di Maria each were not named a finalist for a Champions League positional award, but they all finished in the top 10 in their respective categories.

The two awards will be handed out during the 2020-2021 UEFA Champions League Group Stage draw on Oct. 1.
