LFP Suspends Di Maria Four Games Over Spitting Incident During Le Classique Fixture

The Ligue de Football Professionnel has elected to suspend Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Angel Di Maria for four games over an alleged spitting incident during the recent Le Classique fixture, the organization announced on its official website.

The LFP investigated Di Maria for allegedly spitting at Olympique de Marseille defender Alvaro Gonzalez during PSG’s tense-filled contest against its bitter rivals over a week ago. The allegation from Gonzalez was not dealt with by referee Jerome Brisard during the contest. Brisard did not hand out a card to Di Maria, nor was he called to check VAR to confirm Gonzalez’s claims.

The LFP decided to open an investigation into Gonzalez’s allegation and found his claim to be true, in large part due to images provided by Telefoot.

This suspension will certainly hurt PSG, as Di Maria has been its top performer so far this season. The Argentine will now miss PSG’s fixtures against Stade de Reims, Angers, Nimes Olympique, and Dijon. Di Maria will not be eligible to feature for the club until its Ligue 1 away fixture against Nantes on Nov. 1.

The LFP also announced that it will hold a meeting to further investigate Neymar’s allegation that Gonzalez racially abused him during the Le Classique fixture. This scheduled meeting will take place on Sept. 30.
