Paris Saint-Germain feared the worse when defender Juan Bernat left the team’s Ligue 1 fixture against Metz due to what was then presumed to be a knee injury. Now, the club has further details on his status.
Bernat has been diagnosed with an ACL injury in his left knee, the club announced on its official website. PSG reportedly initially believed that the Spanish defender suffered at the least a left knee sprain injury. The team’s medical staff further examined his injury on Thursday and concluded that he suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.
PSG has not provided an official timetable for his recovery, but it will be quite a while before the club sees Bernat back in training. He is slated to at the least be out of action for the rest of this year. Pending his rehab process, the club could possibly see him back in time for the latter rounds of the UEFA Champions League knockout stage next year if PSG advances that far again.
For now, PSG manager Thomas Tuchel will likely select Mitchel Bakker for the now vacant starting left-back role.
