‘We Will Try to Attack and Win the Game’ — Atalanta’s Gomez on Mindset for Champions League Quarter-Final Against PSG

With Atalanta recently finishing up its Serie A campaign, the focus for the team is now over to the UEFA Champions League duel against Paris Saint-Germain. Typically, a quarterfinal tie in this competition features a home and away game for both sides. But with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the knockout stage from the quarterfinal round and on will be held in Portugal without any fans from either team.

For some teams, they will lose their key home-field advantage. But others see it as a major win to play without fans. Atalanta’s Alejandro Gomez opts for the latter. In an interview with Fox Sports (via Tyc Sports), he explained why his side will have the advantage over PSG in the fanless Estadio da Luz.

“It is not the same to go to play at the Parc des Princes with 80,000 people than to play a 90-minute match without an audience,” Gomez said. “That is an advantage for an inexperienced team like us.”

Even with PSG currently dealing with injuries to key players, Gomez views Les Parisiens as a side to revere. Still, Gomez and Atalanta plan to go all out in its game plan against the reigning Ligue 1 champions.

“We are talking about a team that from midfield forward has all phenomenal and can hurt you at any time,” Gomez said. “We will respect them, but we will try to attack and win the game.”

In the big picture for Atalanta, the fact that the team has made it to the quarterfinals is a grand achievement. Gomez reflected on this and hopes to push further into the tournament.

“For me, for the club and for the entire city, the fact of getting here is spectacular,” Gomez said. “We have faith and we know we can give a little more .”

The winner of the tie will face either Atletico Madrid or RB Leipzig in the semifnals.
