Paris Saint-Germain is backing away from pursuing Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic as it no longer views him as a top priority, according to a report from RMC Sport.
While Milinkovic-Savic is not at the top of PSG’s transfer priority list this summer, the club is still seeking to add a midfielder. The report mentions that the club is looking for a No. 6 to slot into its midfield. PSG manager Thomas Tuchel had settled with slotting in defender Marquinhos into the position over the season, including giving him a start there in the 2020 UEFA Champions League Final against Bayern Munich.
PSG was particularly interested in acquiring Milinkovic-Savic earlier this year. According to a report from Le10Sport, PSG had shown grand interest in pursuing a transfer deal for the Lazio talent.
PSG’s hopes at a potential blockbuster deal for the talent took a blow last month following the midfielder’s comments (via Gianluca Di Marzio’s site) regarding his future at Lazio.
“I’m happy at Lazio, my mind is on this club,” Milinkovic-Savic said. “There’s a contract through 2024, so I’ll stay. My agent will handle the rest.”
For now, PSG will have to look elsewhere for a workhorse midfielder.
