PSG Offered Silva a Late Contract Extension Deal According to his Agent

Thiago Silva’s agent is shedding light on the hectic past week and the late contract extension offer that came from Paris Saint-Germain.

Silva recently completed his free transfer move to Premier League side Chelsea. The Brazilian defender was destined to leave PSG following the UEFA Champions League final after the club refused to offer him a contract renewal deal. But according to Silva’s agent Paulo Tonietto, PSG changed its mind last week and made a late contract extension offer to the longtime club defender. In speaking to L’Equipe, Tonietto offered further details on why Silva was hesitant on accepting the offer.

“He was not hoping any longer because Leonardo told him two months ago that he did not want to extend it,” Tonietto said. “But last Tuesday Leonardo called Thiago and raised the possibility that he would have another year left. Thiago was already agreed with Chelsea, he couldn’t go back. When you make such a proposal, you have to be convinced of it. A sporting director who tells a player he doesn’t want him anymore, and two months more late wants to extend it, how to take that?”

After months of being told that he was not in the club’s plans anymore, Silva was convinced that his time with PSG was over.

“Thiago didn’t see how he could have accepted the proposal of Leonardo saw what he had told him two months earlier,” Tonietto said. “It would have been humiliating.”

Silva’s performances over the Champions League knockout stage may have convinced PSG to change its mind and offer the Brazilian a deal. But Silva had his reasons over why it was simply time to move on.
