Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly interested in signing a Liverpool FC defender, just not the one you’re probably hoping for.
While most PSG supporters would prefer to see Virgil van Dijk at the Parc des Princes, they may have to settle for Joël Matip.
According to Angu Lesley of Kick442, Les Parisiens are keeping a close eye on Matip as a possible replacement for captain Thiago Silva who will depart the club after the end of the UEFA Champions League this month.
Lesly writes that both manager Thomas Tuchel and sporting director Leonardo rate Matip are are prepared to pursue a deal with the 28-year-old.
An ongoing knee injury plagued his 2019-20 season, so despite having four years left on his current deal with Liverpool, the newly crowned Premier League champions may be willing to sell early to PSG and they look to re-tool for next season.
While the 6’3″ center-back only played in nine Premier League matches this season, he was played a much more important role in the previous season for Liverpool. During the 2018-19 season, Matip made 22 appearances in the Premier League and eight in the Champions League, which they went on to win by defeating Tottenham Hotspur in the final.
Going into next season, I feel comfortable with a center-back duo of Marquinhos and Presnel Kimpembe. If Matip were signed, I can’t see him any higher than the third option with Abdou Diallo providing competition for that spot.
