Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar has officially confirmed that he will be staying at the club this upcoming season.
This announcement from Neymar was inevitable considering the off-field circumstances in world football today. Many clubs have had to become conservative with their summer transfer plans due to the recent financial impact of the coronavirus shutdown. For instance, FC Barcelona was a team over the past year that showed the most interest in signing Neymar. But as club president Josep Bartomeu alluded to earlier this month, it has now become extremely difficult for a club to orchestrate a high-priced transfer deal for a superstar like Neymar under the current uncertain transfer market.
With no suitors in sight, Neymar will be back with PSG for another season. In speaking to PSG’s official magazine, the Brazilian forward talked about why he is staying with the club.
“I am staying at PSG next season!” Neymar said. “And with the ambition to return to the Champions League final, this time to win it. I like this idea of doing everything to leave my name in the history books of my club. If people were doubting the presence of PSG as a great European club, those doubts died in Lisbon. We left this city with the feeling of being renewed and confidence in our capacity to win it one day to write an even greater history.”
With Neymar electing to stay with the club for the upcoming season, PSG will remain a serious UEFA Champions League contender.
