French football is front in center of the UEFA Champions League as Paris Saint-Germain will play in the final against FC Bayern Munich. Furthermore, despite the loss, Olympique Lyonnais reached the semi-finals before losing to the Bavarian club.
This showing in Europe has brought the discussion; French clubs need to improve their squads and perform well in European competitions. Furthermore, the number of casual football fans pushing against the “farmers league” narrative are people Ligue 1 needs to target.
One way of possibly attracting is to hope that Olympique de Marseille can improve their squad to put up a challenge against PSG in Le Classique, which is Ligue 1’s marquee match. Les Phocéens are trying to improve their team as they’ll also be participating in the Champions League.
Leonardo Balerdi is the newest Marseille defender, who’s on loan from Borussia Dortmund. The 21-year-old tried to earn some points after discussing domestic expectations for 2020-21 after speaking with La Provence.
“If you want to fight to win the championship, you have to beat everyone, whether it’s at the start or at the end. I hope that we will take advantage of these first shocks,” Balerdi said. “PSG, it’s obvious that they are candidates and that they have great players, but we can beat them, and we can be champions. We will do everything we can.”
The last time Marseille defeated PSG was in 2011, so we will see if Balerdi’s words hold some truth.
