Paris Saint-Germain are just hours away from walking onto the pitch at the Estádio da Luz to take on RB Leipzig with a place in the final of the UEFA Champions League on the line. Few didn’t expect them to be here though.
PSG are always doubted in the Champions League and to be fair, they haven’t given non-fans reason to think this could be their year. When it was revealed that Les Parisiens would take on Atalanta in the quarter-final, many supporters breathed a sigh of relief in having avoided FC Bayern Munich and Manchester City. However, many in the media took to Twitter to officially put PSG on upset alert.
There was insinuation and then just downright snarkiness from the blue checks. Much like Borussia Dortmund in the previous round of the tournament, Atalanta was the new darlings of football who dared stand up to the big bad PSG.
Unfortunately for Atalanta, they forgot that a football match is 90 minutes and squandered a 1-0 lead in the waning minutes and PSG escaped with a 2-1 victory.
Now, PSG will face Leipzig in the semi-final (read my interview with Caught Offside) and the blue checks are eerily quiet. Is it because Leipzig has a dodgy business model and upset German football or is it because PSG has finally given them a reason to believe? We shall see.
PSG fans who think they got a good draw with Atalanta are like the family in Parasite who didn’t know there was someone hiding in the basement

Nightmare draw for Juventus. To get to final they‘d have to go through Man City and Bayern – the 2 best teams in UCL
Decent draw for Atalanta. They’re super fit & they’ll be playing a rusty PSG in quarters, then potentially Leipzig or Atletico in semis. Not impossible #UCLDraw

Even if you can favor PSG on paper with their players, how rusty are they after such a long time without competitive play?
You can't count out an Atalanta who is the highest-scoring team in all of Italy & currently 14 games unbeaten.
That quarterfinal match will be must-see TV.

Yep the draw couldn’t really have gone any better for them. You don’t want to play Atalanta when you’re not fully fit as PSG won’t be

If there's one thing I've learned about Juve – Atalanta, is that PSG need to be more worried and Lyon need to be less worried.

Atalanta – with a Championship mid-table budget whose strategy on the pitch is the equivalent of a pantera album, and is currently on a roll in Serie A- faces a PSG side who hasn’t played a competitive game since March.

I’m going for Atalanta to knock out PSG
— James Ducker (@TelegraphDucker) July 10, 2020
Atalanta is arguably the worst tie for PSG.
They will be huge favourites but are up against a team which have absolutely no fear and PSG are not exactly the most confident knockout side in the Champions League
