Former Paris Saint-Germain youth Christopher Nkunku moved to RB Leipzig last summer in search of a significant role and more playing time.
In his first season with the German club, the 22-year-old scored five goals and had 16 assists in all competitions. Nkunku played all over the midfield and up front for Leipzig, but his most effective position was left-wing where he recorded 15 of his 16 assists along with two goals.
Despite having success in Germany, Nkunku does look back during his time with Les Parisiens. The left-winger spoke with France Football and stated that he thinks about what could have gone different since he wanted to experience personal success with PSG.
The French media outlet asked the 22-year-old to recall his first training with the capital club.
“I was in my room in the center. My phone is vibrating. I don’t answer. It vibrates a second time, and then I tell myself that it must be urgent for us to insist like this,” Nkunku said. “It was my coach in U19 who told me that they need a player to make up the numbers among the pros. I jumped out of my bed to rush to the locker room before they found another player. I don’t know if I’ve run that fast before.”
Next, they touched on his departure, but Nkunku does say that he tried everything in his control to force his way into having more minutes with his play; however, it didn’t happen.
“I am convinced that I could have imposed myself, have more playing time. I knew before the last year that I had to leave, but coach Tuchel told me he was counting on me and young people,” Nkunku said. “However, things did not go as I hoped. Even if there is no feeling of failure on my part, I still find it a shame because I felt capable of playing a real role. I even dreamed of one day being PSG captain. Never mind.”
Finally, they ask Nkunku does he think about playing for the France national team with UEFA Euro 2020 taking place next summer.
“Obviously, the France team makes me dream. I tasted the different selections of young people,” Nkunku said. “I know that blue suits me well. And I think that with two more golden stars on the chest, this color would suit me even better. “
