Angel Di Maria hates Manchester United and his wife had some not-so-nice things to say about the city as well. The feeling is mutual from Manchester supporters if you’ve ever seen the comments on social media about anything involving the player and his former team.
His single season in the Premier League started out well in 2014 but Di Maria never settled in under then-manager Louis van Gaal. There was also a report that burglars attempted to break into his home while he was home with his family.
Manchester United finished fourth that season but was very much a team in transition and combined with safety issues off the pitch, Di Maria pushed for a transfer to PSG during the summer of 2015.
In a column on The Sunday Times (via Stretty News), Rooney called Di Maria “a wonderful player” and shared some insight into the Argentina international’s short-lived career in Manchester.
“When he came to United I remember Louis van Gaal saying to the team: ‘He is the only one who is allowed to dribble with the ball.'”
“Angel works tirelessly on the pitch and his delivery, vision, and awareness are brilliant.”
“He could have been a major star at United but at the time we were going through a bit of a transition and it was tough for him to settle.”
“He had young kids and lived a couple of houses down from me and someone tried to burgle him. I remember that really shook him and his family.”
“From then on, really, you knew it was going to be tough for him and it was probably better for him to leave.”
Paris Saint-Germain’s loss to Manchester United last season in the UEFA Champions League stung, but with a finals appearance this season, it’s hard to argue with Rooney that leaving Manchester and the Premier League was the best thing for Di Maria.
