Cavani’s Agent Says a Deal with Benfica ‘Is On Track’

Former Paris Saint-Germain forward Edinson Cavani has been linked with several clubs over the past month, and one Portuguese side may soon come to a contract agreement with the Uruguayan forward.

Cavani’s brother and current agent Walter Guglielmone confirmed to ESPN that the forward is in discussions with S.L. Benfica on a possible deal. Guglielmone did not confirm that any such deal is imminent but did allude that the two sides are in talks for a free transfer agreement.

“It is a bit on track but it is not closed,” Guglielmone said.

Guglielmone also noted to ESPN that several details on the potential agreement are still missing and that Cavani is scheduled to meet with him soon to speak about the potential deal. He did not add any details as to whether the Uruguayan forward has received serious interest from other clubs as well.

Cavani left PSG earlier this summer after his contract officially expired. El Matador decided not to extend his deal up until the conclusion of the team’s UEFA Champions League run as he opted to instead focus on finding a new club and signing a free agent deal. Since Cavani’s controversial decision, PSG went on to claim the Coupe de France and Coupe de la Ligue titles and is currently in the Champions League semifinals.

Benfica is in a retooling period as it is just coming off of a second place finish in Primeira Liga. The club recently brought back Jorge Jesus to become the new manager and now eyes Cavani to slot into the team’s attack upfront.

The 33-year-old Cavani is coming off of his worst season with PSG scoring-wise, as he logged just seven goals in all competitions.
