Atletico Madrid President Cools Off Interest for PSG Transfer Target

Real Madrid midfielder James Rodriguez is one of the prime top candidates in world football to likely depart for another club this summer. Multiple top teams may end up showing preliminary interest in signing Rodriguez, including La Liga side Atletico Madrid. For years, Atletico has been one of the teams rumored to sign James, but no deal ever materialized. However, the club may decide to once again shy away from a potential deal.

Atletico club president Enrique Cerezo spoke on Wednesday to Radio Marca about his thoughts on Rodriguez. At the moment, he is satisfied with the squad and does not currently see the Colombian as a player who the club aspires to sign.

“I have no idea if he will finally come,” Cerezo said. “I do not think that he enters the plans of Atlético de Madrid.”

If Atletico decides to completely rule out signing Rodriguez this summer, it would mean one less team for Paris Saint-Germain to deal with in negotiations for the midfielder if it decides to move forward on a deal. The club was recently linked with Rodriguez in transfer rumors last month. According to a report from Le10Sport, Rodriguez’s agent, Jorge Mendes, offered James to PSG. However, no serious talks between the two sides have been reported since then.

Rodriguez currently has one year left on his contract, so any deal for the midfielder would not be as expensive compared to if he had multiple years left. At the moment, no other teams have emerged as possible serious contenders to sign Rodriguez.
