Unless something drastic changes in the coming days, former Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani will likely sign with SL Benfica. However, if you ask the 33-year-old’s father, the Portuguese club isn’t exactly his first choice.
Record published the comments made by Luis Cavani, who stated that PSG’s all-time leading goal scorer prefers a move to Atlético Madrid.
“My son wants to play there. Atlético Madrid is his first choice. Simeone is a coach with a great personality, and all the players follow him,” Cavani said. “Meanwhile, Cavani has agreed to terminate with PSG and negotiates with Benfica.”
In January, talks between Los Colchoneros and the Uruguay international agreed to personal terms with the club. However, the transfer fell apart.
There are several reasons the deal never went through; it all depends on who people want to believe. Atlético were only willing to pay a fee of €15 million for Cavani; meanwhile, PSG wanted €20 million for El Matador, so there was a disagreement on the price.
Another reason the deal fell was that Atlético couldn’t cover the total economic cost for Cavani, which led to comments from the club president Enrique Cerezo about being robbed.
Benfica supporters will be delighted with the arrival of Cavani, but there’s no denying that the 33-year-old had his heart set on Atlético.
