Saint-Étienne Defender to Miss Cup Final Against PSG After Returning to Arsenal

AS Saint-Étienne will be without one of its key players for the Coupe de France final, as William Saliba has made the official switch to Arsenal FC.

Saliba spent the year with Saint-Étienne after Arsenal had signed him last summer but elected to keep him with the French club for a one-year loan.

Saint-Etienne confirmed the news via social media that Saliba will be absent for the final against Paris Saint-Germain. The club had discussions with Arsenal on allowing Saliba to stay for just the Coupe de France final before he would go on to embark on his new journey with the Gunners. But unfortunately for Les Verts, this will not be the case.

This should be good news for PSG. Saliba had a strong season for the French club. In Ligue 1 play this past season, he posted rates of 1.73 tackles won per 90 and 3.55 successful pressures per 90. While he only played in a low 12 games in league play, he did well to showcase why he should be a promising defender to watch. PSG did not face him this past season, but he would have exerted a notable presence against Neymar and Mauro Icardi when in the penalty box.

PSG should now anticipate facing some of the team’s other young defensive prospects like Wesley Fofana.
