The records just keep on mounting for Paris Saint-Germain. With its Coupe de la Ligue final win over Olympique Lyonnais, PSG notched yet another domestic treble. The club had already clinched the Ligue 1 title back in April and secured the Coupe de France tournament win last week in the final over AS Saint-Etienne.
This marks the fourth domestic treble for PSG in its club history and first since the 2017-2018 campaign. Thiago Silva, Marquinhos, Edinson Cavani and Marco Verratti are the only players to be part of all of those campaigns.
Among teams in Europe’s top five leagues, no other team has more than one domestic treble honor. Premier League side Manchester City was the previous team to notch a domestic treble, which the club achieved over the 2018-2019 season under manager Pep Guardiola. But within all of Europe, PSG is behind Scottish sides Rangers (nine) and Celtic (eight) for the most domestic trebles.
Unfortunately for PSG, this will be the last domestic treble in its club’s history. The Coupe de la Ligue tournament will be scrapped following this season. So if PSG wish to achieve a landmark treble over a season, it will need to win the UEFA Champions League, Ligue 1 and Coupe de France titles.
