‘It’s a Great Opportunity to Win a Trophy’ — Lyon Manager on Coupe de la Ligue Final Against PSG

It has been quite a while since Olympique Lyonnais last won a trophy in any competition. The Ligue 1 side last hoisted up a trophy back in 2012 with its Trophee des Champions final win. Now, the French side is hoping to end the near-decade-long drought of trophyless seasons with a win over Paris Saint-Germain in the upcoming Coupe de la Ligue final.

In his pre-match press conference, Lyon manager Rudi Garcia (via the team’s official website) spoke about the ambition to finally claim another tournament win.

“It’s a great opportunity to win a trophy,” Garcia said. “It has been too long since we won any. We must give our full tooth to this opportunity. We want to bring the trophy back to Lyon.”

Lyon will be facing a PSG side that has had its number so far this season. They are winless against Les Parisiens over the current campaign with a trio of abysmal losses. Garcia knows the challenge at hand in tomorrow’s cup final and hopes to turn the tide over the reigning Ligue 1 champions.

“We had shown that we were capable of scoring goals,” Garcia said. “You shouldn’t compete over 60 minutes but over 90 or 120. You have to be prepared for that. … Each match has its truth and I don’t know tomorrow night’s. We talked a lot with the staff. It is believed that the last 20 minutes will be physically complicated for both teams.”

PSG is the clear favorite in this cup final but a team like Lyon will not be an effortless side to go up against.
