In his prime, Thiago Silva was always in the discussion for best defender in the world. There’s a reason his nickname is O Monstro after all.
Nonetheless, at 35-years-old, the Brazil international’s time with Les Parisiens is coming to an end and it’s causing many to reflect on his career, which includes former Girondins de Bordeaux striker Christophe Dugarry.
On his Team Duga program on RMC Sport, the 48-year-old not only said that he’s an admirer of Silva and how he plays on defense, but Dugarry believes that he’s in the top ten all-time when it comes to defenders.
🗣💬 "C'est un grand, très grand défenseur. J'aurai adoré l'avoir dans mon équipe"

“I have always loved Thiago Silva. I think he’s a huge player. He is able to be tough on the man. To defend well, he is an excellent raiser, and he has a vision of the game. Even if some say that he sometimes lacks leadership and mental resource, I would not change of opinion,” Dugarry said. “For me, he is a very big defender, I would have loved to have him on my team, and I think he will be one of the ten best defenders in the world and in history. I love Thiago Silva.”
There’s no denying that Silva is a great defender, however, as a captain and leader, he has some warts on his resume as he’s come up small in some very big moments.
Last summer, the 35-year-old played a part in Brazil winning the Copa America, but at the club level, he’s still waiting for the moment where he shines.
Against Borussia Dortmund in the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League, Silva’s play wasn’t inspiring and he couldn’t keep Erling Haaland quiet in the first leg. Then at the Parc des Princes, Silva wasn’t missed as Presnel Kimpemebe kept the Norway international quiet and PSG advanced to the quarter-finals.
Despite failing to have a solid performance against Dortmund, Silva can still redeem himself as the Champions League resumes in August.
