The cover athlete for FIFA 21, the next iteration of the popular football video game, is unlikely to be revealed at EA Play 2020 on Thursday, June 18, but it’s being reported that it will feature a Paris Saint-Germain player.
According to AreaJugones, Neymar Jr. was supposed to be the cover athlete last season but due to his legal issues where he was accused of rape, Electronic Arts, the maker of the FIFA video game, decided to play it safe and go with Eden Hazard instead.
The deal between EA and Neymar is still in place for FIFA 21 but the report indicates that an announcement could be delayed for various reasons.
With last summer’s transfer drama between PSG, FC Barcelona, and Neymar, EA is reportedly reluctant in announcing Neymar as the cover athlete in case he does leave for the Catalan club this summer. Barcelona has a deal with Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer, which is a direct competitor to EA’s FIFA series. EA wants to make sure Neymar will remain a PSG player before promoting him on the cover of their game.
Essentially, Neymar will be the cover athlete if he remains at PSG, however, if he leaves or there are serious rumors about his departure from the French capital, then his teammate, Kylian Mbappé could replace him.
Who knew there was so much drama involved with a video game?
