As more football leagues across Europe are putting out dates for their return to action behind closed doors after a lengthy layoff due to the coronavirus, many people are beginning to give a side-eye to the French government.
Last month, French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced that there would be no sporting events before September, which meant that the 2019-20 Ligue 1 season was effectively over.
Fast forward a month later, and with every other top league in Europe returning to the pitch, the decision to cancel all sporting events until the fall appears like an overreaction.
PSG Talk contributor Marc Damon gave his thoughts on the situation earlier this week, and he’s not alone when it comes to showing frustration in how this situation was handled.
Olympique Lyonnais president Jean-Michel Aulas wants to see the decision to cancel the Ligue 1 season reversed and for play to resume in July. Along with Aulas, RMC Sport journalist Daniel Riolo took to Twitter after the Premier League made it known that they’d return on June 17.
“Ah, the English are also picking up! Damn it then. I think we are going to pass again for idiots. As usual,” Riolo said. “I hope that the gravediggers in our football will one day dare to recognize how wrong they were!”
@AfterRMC Ah les anglais reprennent aussi ! Merde alors. Je crois bien qu’on va encore passer pour des cons. Comme d’hab quoi. J’espère que les fossoyeurs de notre foot oseront un jour reconnaître à quel point ils ont eu tort !
