The striker position for Paris Saint-Germain will undergo some changes once the 2019-20 season comes to an end with the contracts of Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Edinson Cavani’s expiring.
Mauro Icardi’s loan deal will also expire, however, the capital club sporting director Leonardo is looking to keep the 27-year-old past this season as both sides are reportedly close to a deal.
Despite his contract expiring, Cavani is reportedly willing to take a 40 percent reduction in his wages to extend his contract with Les Parisiens. However, at 33-years-old, it seems as though PSG will likely move on from their all-time leading goal scorer.
Former capital club central defender Alain Roche spoke with Europe 1 (via ParisFans), and he wants his former team to decide who to move forward with at striker. For him, the clear choice is Icardi.
“I think we have to separate from one of the two. And I think the future is Icardi: he’s younger, he’s a goalscorer with regular statistics season after season, he’s a totally different profile from Cavani,” Roche said. “We know the love that PSG supporters have for Cavani, and it’s reciprocal. But at some point, you have to stop, and I think it’s time. Keeping Icardi is a very good solution. Not at any cost, I hear it.”
If Icardi is indeed the man that will play the number nine role for PSG, the Ligue 1 champions are potentially shifting gears towards his backup.
They are reportedly interested in Adolfo Gaich from San Lorenzo de Almagro, and with a potential young player acclimating to the European game, Icardi will undoubtedly be the man in Paris.
