Grading PSG: Meunier Makes a Mess of Opportunity to Impress

Now that the 2019-20 Ligue 1 season is over, it’s time to hand out some grades to the Paris Saint-Germain players for their performance in the French top flight.

Note: In order to be graded, each player needed to have appeared in at least five Ligue 1 matches this season.

Thomas Meunier

Intro: Coming into the season, Thomas Meunier had the opportunity to make the right-back position at Paris Saint-Germain his and his only. Colin Dagba was the only real competition for the position and he spent most of the season injured.

Unfortunately, despite numerous chances to impress manager Thomas Tuchel, Meunier failed to show the consistency needed to give fans confidence that he was the solution moving forward.

The Belgium international wasn’t great going forward, where he was most comfortable, and he wasn’t a defensive stopper either. Plus, he admitted after a loss to Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League that he had no idea that if he picked up a yellow card that he would be suspended for the second leg.

Stats:

16 Appearances
2 Assists
40.3 Accurate Passes per Game
1.1 Aerial Duels Won per Game
2.4 Ground Duels Won per Game
1.1 Interceptions per Game
1.7 Tackles per Game
3 Yellow cards

Final Grade: C

Outlook: The player who once expressed admiration for the Olympique de Marseille supporters is not long for the French capital. Meunier’s contract expires at the end of the season and it’s been reported that he will join Dortmund for next season.
