Grading PSG: Marquinhos Rises Above the Rest

Now that the 2019-20 Ligue 1 season is over, it’s time to hand out some grades to the Paris Saint-Germain players for their performance in the French top flight.

Note: In order to be graded, each player needed to have appeared in at least five Ligue 1 matches this season.

Marquinhos

Intro: If you were to build the perfect Paris Saint-Germain player in a laboratory, it would look a lot like Marquinhos. The Brazil international is a vice-captain, a fan-favorite, and at 25-years-old, one of the best defenders in Europe.

Following his move from AS Roma to the Parc des Princes in 2013, Marquinhos has primarily been deployed as a center-back. However, since Thomas Tuchel took over as manager in 2018, he has experimented with playing Marquinhos as a defensive midfielder, which has worked out extremely well.

Stats:

19 Appearances
3 Goals
1 Assist
63.8 Accurate Passes per Game
1.9 Aerial Duels Won per Game
2.7 Ground Duels Won per Game
1.3 Interceptions per Game
2.1 Tackles per Game
1 Yellow card

Final Grade: A+

Outlook: After Neymar Jr. and Kylian Mbappé, Marquinhos is the most important player at PSG. He has committed to PSG long-term, signing a contract extension earlier this season until 2024, and his versatility is extremely rare. Marquinhos should be the future captain of PSG and to win the UEFA Champions League, he will need to be at the top of his game.
