Grading PSG: Inconsistency Plagues Gueye’s First Season in Paris

Now that the 2019-20 Ligue 1 season is over, it’s time to hand out some grades to the Paris Saint-Germain players for their performance in the French top flight.

Note: In order to be graded, each player needed to have appeared in at least five Ligue 1 matches this season.

Idrissa Gueye

Intro: You know your club signed a great player when fans of the team the player is leaving are sad about the departure and wish him well. That was the case with Idrissa Gueye who left Everton FC last summer for Paris Saint-Germain.

The soft-spoken defensive midfielder had his breakout game for Les Parisiens in the UEFA Champions League when PSG defeated Real Madrid 3-0 at the Parc des Princes last September. Unfortunately, the Senegal international wasn’t able to maintain that same level of play throughout Ligue 1 play and struggled with consistency. Two injuries in the first half of the season didn’t help him get acclimated with his teammates either.

Stats:

11 Appearances
4 Assists
3 Big Chances Created
38.3 Accurate Passes per Game
0.8 Successful Dribbles per Game
5 Yellow Cards

Final Grade: B-

Outlook: At times this season, Gueye looked every bit as good as Chelsea FC’s N’Golo Kante but other times he seemed lost out on the pitch and gave the ball away in dangerous areas. No offense to Everton, but PSG is the first big club that Gueye has suited up for in his career and it’s possible the pressure got to him at times.

I’m all in on Gueye despite the up-and-down season. I believe he can 100 percent be the player we all thought he would be when he first arrived. If that happens, PSG should be considered one of the favorites to win the UEFA Champions League next season.
