Grading PSG: Icardi’s Hot and Cold Season in the French Capital

Now that the 2019-20 Ligue 1 season is over, it’s time to hand out some grades to the Paris Saint-Germain players for their performance in the French top flight.

Note: In order to be graded, each player needed to have appeared in at least five Ligue 1 matches this season.

Mauro Icardi

Intro: Some called Paris Saint-Germain losers of last summer’s transfer window and cited the loan deal with Inter Milan for Mauro Icardi as one of the reasons. The controversial striker had fallen out of favor with the Italian club and they were all too pleased to see him leave for the French capital.

Icardi hit the ground running and quickly became the preferred striker ahead of PSG’s all-time leading scorer, Edinson Cavani. Unfortunately, Icardi’s white-hot start didn’t last and when the calendar turned to 2020, the Argentine’s production fell way off and Cavani was reinserted as the starting striker.

Stats:

20 Appearances
12 Goals
2 Assists
106 min. Scoring Frequency
4 Big Chances Created
7.3 Accurate Passes per Game

Final Grade: B-

Outlook: Where will Icardi play his football next season? That is one of the biggest questions heading into the transfer window (whenever it opens that is). Inter Milan would prefer he stay at PSG for financial reasons and the fact that Icardi didn’t play in PSG’s two games against Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League leads you to believe they aren’t completely sold on him.

It will cost PSG €70 million to make Icardi’s loan deal permanent. They can then sell him on for a profit, or, swap him for players they actually want/need. There’s also the possibility that Icardi could be PSG’s starting striker next season, which wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world either.
