Grading PSG: Bernat Continues to be a Pleasant Surprise

Now that the 2019-20 Ligue 1 season is over, it’s time to hand out some grades to the Paris Saint-Germain players for their performance in the French top flight.

Note: In order to be graded, each player needed to have appeared in at least five Ligue 1 matches this season.

Juan Bernat

Intro: There was little to no fanfare when Paris Saint-Germain signed Juan Bernat from FC Bayern Munich in 2018. The Germans were all too happy to get rid of him and PSG needed to add depth to the left-back position. Little did Les Parisiens known that Bernat would quickly become a regular starter and scorer of several important goals.

This season, Bernat has maintained his steady play that fans have become accustomed to but he did experience a brief injury spell earlier this year with a calf issue. Despite the setback, Bernat is a vital cog in the PSG machine.

Stats:

18 Appearances
4 Assists
50.3 Accurate Passes per Game
0.5 Aerial Duels Won per Game
4.8 Ground Duels Won per Game
0.6 Interceptions per Game
2.3 Tackles per Game
5 Yellow cards

Final Grade: B+

Outlook: There’s no doubt that Bernat has outplayed all expectations but you have to ask yourself if he just looks good compared to Layvin Kurzawa? The Spain international is a solid player to have in the squad but if PSG wants to reach that next level and win the UEFA Champions League, they may need to bring in a player like Alex Telles to help increase production on both sides of the pitch.
