Grading PSG: Altercations With Manager the Only Blemish on Mbappé’s Ligue 1 Report Card

Now that the 2019-20 Ligue 1 season is over, it’s time to hand out some grades to the Paris Saint-Germain players for their performance in the French top flight.

Note: In order to be graded, each player needed to have appeared in at least five Ligue 1 matches this season.

Kylian Mbappé

Intro: Kylian Mbappé is on a completely different level than any opponent he comes up against and I’m not just talking about Ligue 1. He would dominate any league in the world and this season, I feel like he elevated his game beyond what we’ve seen previously.

We knew Mbappé was competitive but this season, that competitive drive boiled over into two public altercations with Thomas Tuchel after the manager dared to sub his superstar off early in a couple of matches.

That poor judgment on Mbappé’s part is what forced me to lower his grade a bit, but let me be clear, he still had a phenomenal domestic season. He led Ligue 1 in scoring with 18 goals and he showed that he is so much more than a “pace merchant.”

Stats:

20 Appearances
18 Goals
5 Assists
84 min. Scoring Frequency
17 Big Chances Created
24.2 Accurate Passes per Game

Final Grade: A-

Outlook: If only I had a crystal ball and could foresee what Mbappé outlook at PSG will be. Under contract until 2022, there’s already speculation that the 21-year-old could leave next summer with Real Madrid the likely destination. PSG executives are diligently working on a contract extension to keep their superstar from leaving in a year’s time but as of right now, Mbappé hasn’t commented on his future and it’s really anyone’s guess what he might do.
