Former Marseille Striker Defeats Ibrahimovic as Ligue 1’s Top Striker of the Last 20 Years

The best Ligue 1 striker of the last 20 years (2000-2020) is Didier Drogba according to an online poll organized by the official Ligue 1 Twitter account.

Many remember Drogba from his glory days with Chelsea FC but he got his start in France with Le Mans in Ligue 2 before moving on to the top flight with EA Guingamp and eventually Olympique de Marseille.

Drogba played in Ligue 1 from 2001 to 2004 and scored 39 combined goals with Guingamp and Marseille. I point out these figures because of how ridiculous they look compared to Paris Saint-Germain’s Edinson Cavani.

From 2013 to 2020, El Matador has netted 138 goals in 200 appearances in the French capital. How Drogba topped Cavani is anyone’s guess and probably proves Marseille (and probably Chelsea fans) have too much time on their hands.

Cavani crashed out of the bracket in the semi-finals to former teammate Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who apparently hated the Uruguayan. Drogba advanced to the finals against Ibrahimovic by knocking out another former PSG star, Pauleta.

Congrats to Drogba on his Twitter victory but PSG fans know who the real best striker of the past 20 years is.
