You don’t typically hand out end-of-season awards this early in May but with the cancelation of the Ligue 1 season due to the coronavirus, we’re doing things a bit differently.
On Friday, Ligue 1 announced that Kylian Mbappé just narrowly edged Wissam Ben Yedder for the title of top scorer despite both sitting on 18 goals for the season.

The decision was based on the fact that Mbappé scored his 18 goals from open play (in 20 games) while Ben Yedder scored 15 from open play and added three penalty kicks.
That technicality didn’t sit well with Mbappé who took to Twitter to declare that Ben Yedder deserves a trophy as well.
🏆🥇
Merci à tous pour vos messages.
Je pense par contre que Wissam aussi mérite un trophée, comme ça s’est fait en Premier League la saison dernière pour récompenser son année 🤷🏽♂️…

“Thank you all for your messages. I do think that Wissam also deserves a trophy, as they did in the Premier League last season to reward his year…”
Mbappé is, of course, referencing the Golden Boot race last year in the Premier League where Sadio Mané, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and Mohamed Salah all finished with 22 goals on the season.
