Once the 2019-20 season concludes, Paris Saint-Germain will have a decision to make on what to do with Mauro Icardi.
The 27-year-old has a €70 million option-to-buy clause, and there’s plenty of conflict as to whether or not Les Parisiens should make the Argentine’s stay in Paris a permanent one.
While PSG supporters are debating as to what the club should do, former France international and Juventus FC striker, David Trezeguet spoke with Le Parisien (via Culture PSG) and advises the capital club to purchase Icardi.
Despite the striker having a cold streak before the season came to a stop, Trezeguet believes that the 27-year-old has shown qualities to be the PSG striker going forward.
“Several parameters encourage me to say yes. PSG should exercise this option. First, his age. At 27, he is still young. Then, there are very few attackers of such a level, with such statistics on the market,” Trezeguet said. “Even if he played less before the end of the competitions, he adapted to PSG and proved his qualities. Icardi, it is better to have him with you than against you.”
It’s a tale of two halves for Icardi. The striker was making it an easy decision to make his loan permanent, then once the calendar turned to 2020, the dry spell began. Furthermore, his goal drought led to manager Thomas Tuchel leaning towards Edinson Cavani.
Since February, the Uruguayan became the featured striker, which included starting in both matches against Borussia Dortmund in the knock stages of the UEFA Champions League.
With the potential interest from Napoli, PSG will have to weigh its options and decide whether or not Icardi is their number nine of the future.
